Joseph Declan Moran wrote: Before the dunk, the shot clock, or the three-point shot, the Rockaway Game emphasized the extra pass, tough defense, setting picks, and looking for the open man. Anything more fancy than the give-and-go or pick-and-roll on offense was considered showy.

This book also states:

"It was the East Coast-style hoops of the weave-and-pass as opposed to the West Coast run-and-gun style make famous by Stanford and its star Hank Luisetti. It was Luisetti who popularized the one-handed shot. Later, Kenny Sailors of Wyoming took Luisetti's idea one step further when he introduced the jump shot during the 1945-46 basketball season."
