Step and Shoot

In this posed photograph from the 1940-41 season (University of Wyoming Yearbook of 1941) Kenny Sailors is demonstrating the “Step and Shoot” as was employed by some stars of his era, e.g. Johnny Adams of Arkansas and Hank Luisetti of Stanford.

However, this wasn’t Kenny’s shot.

Yet, some early observers referred to what you see here as a “jump shot,” because it was nothing like they had witnessed before. But as you can see it’s not really the modern jump shot we know – the one Kenny pioneered. He is just showing how it looked for the sake of the camera and to give a clear example of that shot to compare with his.

Kenny said the first person he heard to coin the words, “step and shoot,” was Coach Ray Meyer of DePaul University.

Others referred to it as a “running one-hander.”

Johnny Adams was a star player at the University of Arkansas in the early 1940s. His version of the “step and shoot” is seen in this photograph. It’s taken from the NCAA tournament regional game vs. Wyoming in Kansas City on March 21, 1941.
